Lake Ouachita, AR – 2021 Road Trip

Lake Ouachita is Arkansas’s largest lake with 40,000 acres of water surrounded by the scenic Ouachita National Forest.

With everything from swimming to water skiing and scuba diving, boating, kayaking, or paddleboarding, along with plenty of opportunities for fishing, there is something at the Lake Ouachita State Park for everyone.

We’re finally traveling again! As much fun as those stay-home orders were last year (ha, not at all),  we are so very happy to be on the road again this summer.

We spent the first night in Nashville and then we were in Arkansas at Lake Ouachita State Park for the past five days.

When we stayed at the lake a few years ago, we only spent a couple of nights there and it was one of my favorite stops.

While planning this trip, I knew we’d be heading back through Arkansas and looked forward to spending more time here this year. It did not disappoint.

We swam, skipped rocks, played games, and soaked up every minute of downtime. This was the perfect way to kick off our summer road trip and we’re all relaxed and ready for more travel now.

This remains one of my favorite places to camp and I highly recommend a stay if you’re ever lucky enough to be in the area.

The state park is less than an hour off I-40 and well worth the scenic drive. The weather was plenty hot during the day, and humid too, but it didn’t spoil our fun.

The camping spaces here are truly lovely. Whether you’re in a camper, a tent, or renting a cabin, there is tons of space between the sites.

If you’re a tent camper, you can reserve one of these gorgeous walk-out sites right off the lake. They are some of the prettiest campsites I have ever seen.

We set up our cook station and managed to cook at least half of our meals outdoors this week – despite the hot weather: hot dogs and burgers, last-minute chicken, crispy carnitas, buttermilk pancakes, and breakfast burritos.

I’ve linked to some of the recipes here, and I’m planning to share a full blog post next month with all of our favorite camping meals when on the road.

I mentioned it a week or two ago, but it bears mentioning again, we really love our Blackstone griddle. It’s perfect for easy meals on the road and at home too.

We hit the road again today and are spending the night in Texas on our way to Carlsbad Caverns.

Have you visited the caverns? I’ve been a couple of times and they were breathtaking both times. I can hardly wait to share this wonder with my boys.

Have a wonderful week, my friends!
