Winter Fruit Salad
All your favorite winter fruits in a colorful fruit salad with a delicious honey lemon poppy seed dressing. I can’t stop making this salad for family dinners and gatherings with friends.
This winter I was hosting my brother in law’s family for a taco night in the middle of December. I found myself totally resisting the normal Mexican food sides, yearning for something lighter and brighter. Aha! Fruit salad!
Years ago we used to make a poppy seed and lemon fruit salad all the time but when we went through unemployment and hard pregnancies ,we slowly stopped making it. I think we had it at least twice a month this last winter because bringing back an old fav was just way too fun!
What Ingredients are in Winter Fruit Salad?
The fruits for a winter fruit salad are really up to you and what is easily accessible where you live. I will list our favorite combinations of fruit, but feel free to customize it to your heart’s (and belly’s) content. Here is your grocery list:
- Pineapple
- Kiwi
- Mandarin Oranges
- Pomegranate Arils
- Grapes
- Blueberries
- Bananas
- Lemon Juice
- Honey
- Poppy Seeds
How to Make Winter Fruit Salad
One of the things I love about this salad is that it’s so easy to make. It is really just 3 steps:
- Place all the fruit in a bowl.
- Whisk together all the ingredients for the dressing in a small bowl.
- Pour the dressing over the fruit and stir gently to combine. Serve immediately.
Okay, okay, I know that peeling and slicing all the fruit takes some time, but once you have that done, this salad comes together in a jiffy. Before there is any griping about seeding the pomegranate, I’ll share my tips for seeding a pomegranate below. And you can always buy the pomegranate arils themselves at Costco. I love those little cups!
How to Seed a Pomegranate
This is the easiest way to peel a pomegranate:
Roll the fruit first to loosen the seeds.
Score around the middle and tear it open into halves.
Hold each half over a bowl, seeds facing down and tap the skin with a wooden spoon, squeezing a little to release the seeds.
You can also score 4 lines from top to bottom to quarter the pomegranate.
What to Eat with Winter Fruit Salad
I always seem to make this winter fruit salad on Sundays when I’m making a warm comfort food meal like oven braised short ribs, bolognese, or beef stew.
Even though it is called winter fruit salad, it really can be enjoyed all year round. I make it in the summer for potlucks with friends along with our smoked ribs or brisket. I’ll add strawberries or raspberries to it. Delish!
Variations on a Winter Fruit Salad
I mentioned earlier that you can totally customize this salad to your liking or according to what is in season at the time. A few other ideas include:
- Apples
- Pears
- Craisins
- Strawberries
- Raspberries

How Long Does Fruit Salad Last?
We all know that bananas don’t age well, so if you have leftover fruit salad, pull those out and just gobble them up before storing the rest. The remaining salad will store great for up to 2 days. If you don’t think you’ll get back to it that quickly, I like to freeze my leftovers to use for our breakfast smoothies.
Can I Make This Salad Ahead of Time?
I hesitate to say this because this salad really is best served immediately after making it, but it can be made up to 4 hours ahead of time. Don’t add the bananas until right before serving, but you can slice up the fruit and whisk together the dressing. Store the fruit in a covered container and the combine the fruit, dressing and bananas all right before people dig in.
This is the most refreshing fruit salad with the simplest honey lemon dressing. Who doesn’t love a fruit salad? I mean, I know a few people who hate fruit, but they are broken…fruit salad is the best!
