Blue Cheese Dressing

Blue Cheese Dressing

Creamy, bold, and tangy…this homemade blue cheese dressing is delicious on salads and perfect for dipping your buffalo chicken wings. Homemade dressings are always the best!

Sooooo, I’m not really a blue cheese dressing eater. It has its place and that is the only reason I set out to testing recipes. Because truth be told, a lot of the store bought dressings are what my 5 year old would call, “yucky”. But when you’re making lip-smacking good wings or a killer wedge salad, well you just gotta find the thickest, creamiest dressing.

Cade and I both feel like it all comes down to two things, buy good cheese and always season well. Nope, one more, a really fantastic blue cheese also calls for time. Let it sit in the fridge and do its thing!

Ingredients Needed for Blue Cheese Dressing

The base of most creamy salad dressings is mayo and sour cream, which is where we start with this one. Then we add a few extra ingredients, and boom, you have the best blue cheese dressing ever! Here is your shopping list:

  • Sour Cream
  • Mayonnaise
  • Worcestershire Sauce
  • Dry Mustard
  • Garlic Powder
  • Salt
  • Sugar
  • Buttermilk
  • Blue Cheese
  • Pepper
The measurements for each ingredient can be found in the recipe card below.

How to Make Homemade Blue Cheese Dressing

We all know that there’s nothing like thick, creamy salad dressings made from scratch. They are so simple to make too. I don’t know why we don’t make them at home more often. Just look how easy this is…

  1. Whisk all the ingredients together.
  2. Season to taste with salt and fold in cheese.
  3. Store in an airtight container overnight.

These instructions in more detail can be found in the recipe card below.

What is Blue Cheese?

Blue cheese is essentially moldy cheese. Ahhhhh! I know, it used to totally freak me out too! But it’s totally safe to eat and has a strong bold flavor and smell. It is made with Penicillium (mold) cultures which gives it spots or veins of mold throughout the cheese.

Substitute for Blue Cheese

If you’re looking for a substitute for blue cheese in blue cheese dressing, then maybe this dressing isn’t for you. Just sayin’! Haha! But if you just happen to be out of the blue stuff but want that bold assertive flavor, feta is the best substitute.

How Long Will this Dressing Keep?

My general rule of thumb for homemade salad dressings is to toss them after one week. Without all the preservatives that are added in store bought dressings, I wouldn’t eat a homemade dressing after more than a week.

Can Creamy Dressings Be Frozen?

This dressing can be frozen, but it will lose some of its creamy texture when it thaws. Place it in an airtight container and leave some room for it to expand as it freezes. When ready to eat, removed it from the freezer and let it thaw in the refrigerator.

Whether it’s a wedge salad or buffalo wings that calls for blue cheese dressing, make it from scratch and you won’t regret it! It is so thick and creamy, and you have control of everything going into it which I love.
